Position Overview-This position oversees the copyediting and proofreading functions in the Editorial Division. This position serves as quality control for products published by CPH and is responsible for carefully editing developed manuscripts and implementing any necessary changes.

The essential functions of this position are as follows:
• Carefully reads and corrects developed manuscripts for (a) House style; (b) standard rules of grammar and spelling; (c) clarity of thought and organization; (d) continuity among similar pieces; and (e) accuracy of facts and sources.
• Ensures that manuscripts adhere to Concordia’s House style and general standards of professional publishing (based on The Chicago Manual of Style).
• Leads, trains, and develops staff (including freelance copy editors and the recruitment of them) for maximum effectiveness in support of the goals.
• Coordinates projects ensuring workloads are balanced and deadlines will be met, shifting projects as needed.
• Estimates copyediting and proofreading costs for projects.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• LCMS doctrine and practice.
• English grammar and usage, including a thorough familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style.
• Strong PC skills with high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
• How to access and utilize reference materials (books, Internet, etc.).
• Publishing terminology and practice.
• InCopy/InDesign software.
• Planning, organizing, and systematizing staff workloads.
• Delegating authority and responsibility.
• Training staff and freelance copy editors and proofreaders regarding editorial processes.
• Checking details.
• Applying grammatical and style rules to existing writing.
• Writing and rewriting for clarity.
• Researching facts and data via reference books and Internet.
• Communicate through the written word.
• Work in a tactful and cooperative manner with other team members.
• Meet deadlines.
• B.S./B.A. degree in English, Journalism, or Theology is required; a Master's degree in English or Journalism is preferred. Must be able to demonstrate editing proficiency and knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style.
• Three years of experience in editing is required.
