Job Summary: The Director, Finance and Accounting plays a critical role in the stewardship and financial integrity of the organization’s resources, supporting the mission and values of Lutheran Hour Ministries. This position is responsible for overseeing key financial functions, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with all relevant regulatory and organizational standards. The Director, Finance and Accounting collaborates closely with leadership and provides oversight to ensure financial sustainability and accountability across all programs and departments. Major Responsibilities:
a. Oversee and review all monthly financial close activities, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports. b. Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
a. Provide direct oversight of all aspects of the annual audit process, including preparation of schedules, documentation, and coordination with external auditors. b. Lead the preparation and review of annual expense allocations, IRS Form 990-T, and other regulatory filings. c. Maintain compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and organizational policies.
a. Coordinate the organization-wide annual budgeting process, including the development of templates, guidance for departments, consolidation of budgets, and preparation of final documentation for board approval. b. Support departments in understanding and managing their budgets throughout the fiscal year.
a. Manage all accounting and banking systems used by the Finance Department, including user setup, permissions, system upgrades, and maintenance. b. Evaluate and recommend improvements to financial systems and processes to increase efficiency and security.
a. Serve as an integral part of the accounts payable review and approval process. Work with relevant staff to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant payment workflows. b. Assist with daily cash management oversight and review.
a. Directly supervise the Manager of Investment Accounting and the International Accounting Clerk. b. Provide coaching, support, and performance management to ensure staff success and alignment with organizational goals.
a. Serve as a backup to the Chief Financial Officer during absences or as assigned. b. Provide support to the broader Finance department and cross-functional teams on special projects and ad-hoc initiatives as needed. Minimum Qualification Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s or CPA preferred). • 10 years of progressive experience in nonprofit financial management. • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and tax compliance (e.g., Form 990-T). • Experience managing audits, budgeting processes, and financial systems administration. • Proven leadership and supervisory experience. • Proficiency with accounting software use and management, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting tools. • Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills. • Commitment to the mission and values of LHM Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Sage/Intacct and Salesforce.
