Editor, Academic Resources

Job Type: Full Time

Job Description

The Editor will provide editorial services for academic theological resources and resources that promote and deepen understanding and awareness of the Lutheran Confessions. The Editor conceptualizes products, assists with product development, oversees acquisitions, provides the substantive edit, and oversees the production of resources.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Work cooperatively to ensure timely production of academic-professional resources across the disciplines of theology, especially Confessions/Symbolics, Dogmatics, and Exegetical Theology.
  • Contribute leadership for the development of overall plans for various resources around the Lutheran Confessions.
  • Identify writers, and orient, counsel, and supervise development of manuscripts.
  • Carry out periodic reevaluation and, when necessary, revision of extant materials.
  • Perform substantive edit of manuscripts, within budgeted time and meeting associated deadlines.
  • Write portions of materials on the Lutheran Confessions, in whole or in part, as needed.
  • Ensure that manuscripts adhere to Concordia Publishing House style.
  • Respond to those who communicate with CPH about academic-professional materials and materials on the Lutheran Confessions within the area of the developer's responsibility and expertise.
  • Write and present product briefs at the Publisher's Review Committee, as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess the Following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • LCMS history, doctrine, and practice
  • The historical background and theological content of the Lutheran Confessions
  • The Holy Scriptures in the original languages
  • German and/or Latin (preferred)

Skilled in:

  • Writing and editing, particularly as this pertains to academic resources.
  • Planning, organizing, and systematizing multitask workloads.
  • Strong PC skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
  • InCopy/InDesign software
  • Working cooperatively in a team setting
  • Dealing with others empathetically and with tact

Able to:

  • Communicate zeal for the Lutheran theology and the teachings of the Lutheran Confessions, especially the doctrine of Justification through faith in Christ.
  • Work creatively.
  • Meet deadlines.
  • Adjust to last-minute schedule changes and deadline demands.

Education and Experience

  • Master of Divinity Degree (M.Div.) or equivalent from a seminary of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod or a partner seminary
  • STM degree with a concentration in Lutheran Confessions, Reformation history, or Systematic Theology preferred.
  • Five years or more of parish experience in a church or school setting is preferred.
