Position Summary

The Development Officer plays a vital role in our nonprofit organization by delivering unreasonable hospitality to mid-level supporters through effective cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation. This position is key to advancing our fundraising efforts and will focus on managing donor relationships while contributing to the development and implementation of strategic fundraising initiatives. The ideal candidate will be passionate about our mission, possess excellent communication skills, and have a proven track record in fundraising.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Achieve a comprehensive understanding of the organization's mission for professional representation at donor meetings and events
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with existing donors, ensuring regular communication and engagement
  • Identify and engage new recurring donors to support long-term engagement and support
  • Manage a donor portfolio using a donor management cycle, tracking appropriate information to advance relationships
  • Maintain accurate records of all supporter interactions (visits, calls, emails, proposals) in the Virtuous/CRM systems
  • Implement strategies to achieve annual, comprehensive campaign, and planned giving revenue goals
  • Support the development and execution of annual fundraising campaigns, including direct mail, online giving, and mid-level gift solicitations
  • Collaborate with the development team to plan and execute fundraising events, including identifying potential invitees, speaking engagements, and follow-up efforts
  • Prepare regular reports on fundraising activities, donor engagement, and campaign progress for the Chief Development Officer and Board of Directors
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure alignment of fundraising initiatives with programmatic goals and organizational priorities
  • Represent the organization's mission at various events as needed
  • Provide planned giving resources and opportunities to interested supporters to encourage contributions that align with their values
  • Collaborate with the Marketing department to provide timely updates to supporters
  • Plan and organize for personal domestic travel related to donor engagement and fundraising events
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Preferred candidate will have a Lutheran background and strong knowledge of the faith
  • Ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities
  • Proficiency in donor management software and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with donors, volunteers, and stakeholders
  • Passion for the mission and values of the organization
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
  • Creative and strategic thinker with a proactive approach to problem-solving

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Communications, Marketing or related field
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fundraising, development, or a related role within a nonprofit organization

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while using a computer or performing other tasks
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 15 pounds
  • Evening and weekend hours are expected and frequent
  • Domestic travel is expected and frequent
